The 3 Must-Haves for Affiliate Marketers

Some people make more than thousands bucks a day from affiliate marketing. Many more suffer losses and claim that making money is very hard. Why is the amount of cash these two groups generate very different? Is affiliate marketing easy or difficult?

I have been in this industry for more than seven years. I thought it was tough when I started, too. There are several ways to make money online, and I felt overwhelmed when I saw how people were making money using so many different methods. Which one was the best?

When I started, Google AdSense was popular among Thai affiliates, so I jumped into it. I searched for many techniques on the internet, such as sharing websites of mine that contained Google Ads in Flixya and asking people to click on them. I didn’t know that this was the blackhat method, so I plastered my website all over Flixya.

A few days later, my account was banned.

After that, I tried other ways to earn cash from affiliate marketing. I tried to building niche sites to promote Amazon products. I learned PPC, Banner, Mobile, YouTube, PPV, and so on. I was a bit overwhelmed, but it was okay. I knew that making money from affiliate marketing was possible.

Anyhow, having worked in this game for many years, I think there are just few things you need to be a successful affiliate marketer. Here are some of them:

1. A Business-Owner Mindset

The first ingredient is to have a strong mindset. We have seen many successful guys make lots of bucks while they travel or sleep. We all want that lifestyle, too.

But don’t expect it to happen right off the bat.

When we work for someone else to build their business, we just show up at the office and get our monthly cheque. We are guaranteed to be paid every month (until we get fired).

Working for your own business is different.

You won’t get paid if you don’t work. Although affiliate marketing can generate loads of money while you sleep, you have to work hard to create profitable campaigns. I have been asked by many friends about what I’m doing. They want to learn and start doing it, too. I have given advice to a lot of them, but no one has ever taken it seriously. A few days later, they always go back to square one.

They don’t have a business-owner mindset.

Why? Because they have a job. Their company pays them a monthly salary. They just have to show up at work, do what their boss asks them to do, and try to get promoted so they can earn a higher salary.

That’s safer and easier than running your own business, isn’t it?

When you start out in the affiliate marketing business, you have to work hard. You’ll find that there are many things you never learned in school, so you have to learn them by yourself. You also need to have good time management. No one will give you an order, so you have to do it yourself.

Furthermore, remember that you might not make any money in the first month. Your family and friends will start asking, “What are you doing? Why don’t you find a job?” You have to be able to handle this problem. Just take a deep breath and get back to optimizing your campaigns.

The first thing you need to be successful in affiliate marketing – or in any other business – is to overcome the employee mentality. No one can force you to work. You can only force yourself to do it.

2. A Profound Understanding of Fundamentals

The second important thing is to have a good understanding of the fundamentals. Affiliate marketing might not be easy, but it’s not complex, either. I have seen many people looking for tricks or secrets that will help them make lots of bucks in the shortest time.

As I told you, I knew the trick about getting someone to click on my Google AdSense ad in Flixya. I was excited to see the dollars flow into my account. But, in the end, my account was banned.

When I made money on Amazon, I wrote a script to generate thousands of websites with affiliate links and make them match the domain. (At that time, the domain had a very good ranking in Google’s search engine). I generated more than $500 a day, just by using the script I wrote. But after Google removed the domain’s ranking, I had to go back to square one again.

I was also able to make $300+ profit a day when I started mobile affiliate marketing, too, but I was just using a trick I got from my friend. I found one traffic network that allowed me to buy more than 1,000 clicks for less than $1. Sounds good, right? A few days later, the system was fixed. I can’t use this trick anymore.

Although these tricks made me lots of money, I always had to go back to square one and start finding new tricks. Again and again.

This is normal. We all look for the flashy stuff and neglect the fundamentals. Since I started learning PPV seriously a few years ago, I have created more than 2,000 campaigns and realized that affiliate marketing isn’t that complex. We don’t have to know any tricks. It’s actually all about trial and error.

When I create my profitable PPV campaigns, I just select an offer (I always ask my affiliate manager), do some market and demographic research, run the campaign, analyze the data, cut my losses, scale the campaign, split test, and repeat. That’s all.

These are all the steps I take to create profitable campaigns.

A few people who purchased my PPV Strategy For 2015 last week asked me for a refund. They said that it was too simple. They said it was old information that didn’t contain any new techniques. I sent them their refund, no question asked. The thing is, I always use this simple framework to make more than $500 a day in profit. What I don’t include in my strategy are my profitable offers, targets and landing pages. If they want more complex content … sorry, I don’t offer that.

If you haven’t read it yet, click here to purchase it. (Don’t expect the complex stuff. There isn’t any.)

3. Consistency

The last important ingredient for success, in my opinion, is consistency. I was the man who was satisfied with $100 profit a day. Because the cost of living in my country is not high, $3,000 a month is more than enough to live on in Thailand. But as you know, we can’t expect stable income in this business. One day you may make $100, but tomorrow the conversion rate might drop to zero. The advertiser may remove the offer you’re promoting from the network. You can never know.

This has happened to me several times. The first time I reached $300 profit a day, I felt great. I had done nothing to my campaigns for over two months. One day, the advertiser released a new (and annoying) rule that forced me to change my landing page. The traffic source also removed some profitable targets from my campaigns. They said that those targets didn’t follow the new rule.

My earnings became negative in just a few nights.

After that month, I incurred more than $200 in daily losses as I searched for and tested new campaigns. This went on for half a month. It was very stressful, but I learned a valuable lesson:

Making $1,000 a day for a month might not be as good as making $100 a day consistently for years.

Consistency is what you need. You should spend time on your campaigns, every day. I don’t mean you have to work hard, but just don’t ignore or be too satisfied with your earnings. Keep testing and optimizing your campaigns.

These are the main ingredients needed to be successful in this business. There might be a few more, but I can’t think of them right now. If you want to be in affiliate marketing for years, these basics are very important.

Don’t waste your time looking for tricks that will make you a super-affiliate in just few days – yet eventually send you back to your old 9-to-5 job.

Remember: create a strong business-owner mindset, don’t overlook the fundamentals, and be consistent.

Hi Bank,

Nice articles again. Brought your PPV book last few days and good read. Keep it up. Those asking for refunds probably looking for a secret ninja trick to make 1K in PPV. 🙂

But what I learnt is we will have to relentlessly buy and optimise data to make it in IM. Its not that tough, but there is much works needed in the start.

Thank you very much! Keep following the fundamentals and you will be successful in the long run 🙂

Whoaaa I’m glad you had a good time here! I didn’t go outside home during this week because I don’t want to get wet lol

See you in the class 🙂

Petre says April 15, 2015

I totally agree, always follow the fundamentals, master them and you’ll do find in the long run.

Regarding your curse, I definitely agree on different levels of students and understand your concern. I still think it could be a bit quicker that’s all. So let’s say, not 3 days between lessons but maybe 4-5 or so.

Also, the course is around $50/month and in my opinion is more than enough to put you on the right track. I mean, if anyone expects highly sophisticated advice should contact Charles for his $10.000 course. That’s definitely worth the money but you also have to be at that level of understanding.

Anyway, keep up the good work Bank ;)!

Thanks for your suggestion Petre! 🙂

Hey Bank!

Found your website recently and decided to give PPV a shot. Waiting on some funds to get everything going. Planning on buying your course as well!

Just 1 question: What CPA Networks would you advise to start with? I’m currently signed at Peerfly / Adwork Media and CPAGrip. I really don’t wanna start promoting from a lot of networks at the same time because I Feel that would add a lot of mess for a begginer like me.

Thanks and keep it up!

    Hi Pedro,

Try w4. There are many lead generation offers which suit to PPV traffic. 🙂

Raweewan says April 30, 2015

Good stuffs as always, Bank! And I totally agree with you. No need to look for a tricks, just do the simple steps but consistency. That’s all I’ve been doing with my projects too. 🙂

    Bank says April 30, 2015

Me either. There are soooooo many people looking for the tricks. They have been seeking it for years but still trying. I don’t understand why lol

Widodo says May 1, 2015

Hi Bank,

I bought your eBook PPV Strategy for 2015. You suggested w4 as it has many lead generation offers which suit the PPV methods. I am wondering if w4 would be newbie-friendly as I heard that many of the networks will not work with newbies.

    Bank says May 25, 2015

Sorry for late reply man. You can contact people at w4 to get the account. They’ll do the short interview. Not that difficult 🙂

Nice write up Bank. I was like you too, apparently in the initially stage. At least you have been able to generate money with what you have done, but I’m still struggling with making mine. Took up a course on CPA, costed me a bomb, working on campaigns after campaigns, no good news yet. Asked my AM on good converting offers, my AM send me a list on all top converting offers, and those offers are those that I’m on, but how in the world, other people can get conversion while mine is still in the red. really puzzled me. Have I got the wrong targets? Nope, I don’t think so… Well, my mind is filled with so many doubts…
Now, I stopped my campaign and look for answers to my questions above. But you know what… No answer as yet, when I found out, it is the same method that I have been doing…. well, guess I need to dig deeper for an answer.
well, that’s the life of a internet marketer… you asked the questions, you better go look for an the answer yourself…
Hope to hook up with you, if there’s a chance….
